Effective security is governed by the Weakest Link theory.  Protection against any sequence of events depends on the support of the whole, which is only as reliable as its weakest link.  In the case of security, the links are the components in the system.

The problem with security in general, and especially residential and marine security, is that entire industries have developed around the notion of supplying individual links rather than complete, fully functional solutions.  This becomes clear when viewing the dynamics of crime.
